What Are the Road Conditions Like in Yosemite Right Now?

Chains required on the road into Yosemite. Photo by Rick Z.

Carrie sent me a Wave to ask, “We’re coming up this weekend for a family vacation we’ve been planning for months. Are chains required in Yosemite?”

Well the answer is, Yes. Currently road conditions in Yosemite Valley are R2, tire chains or 4-wheel-drive with snow tires required

Highwayy 41, the Big Oak Flat Road including Highway 120 west of Crane Flat and the Hetch Hetchy road are also R2.

Highway 140 to Merced is currently R1.

These road conditions can change at any time so before you head into the park call the parks information line. For road conditions call 209-372-0200, press 1, then 1.
