Twitters started flying early this afternoon when the National Park Service announced that Tioga Pass had been reopened, but for how long? A severe winter storm is expected to pass through the Central Sierra Thursday night bringing with it high winds, rain and snow down to the 2000 foot level.

If you’re planning to head to Yosemite Valley or other parts of the Sierra this weekend it’s probably a good idea to bring your chains, plenty of food, blankets and warm clothing. With nasty storm like the one expected this weekend it may be a while before anyone happens along to find you if you get stuck.

My guess is that it’ll be open until Saturday and then closed until May 28, 2011.
