Old Priest Grade Closed Next Week

The locals know that the fast way up to Groveland is to take Old Priest Grade. Unfortunately, it looks like the trip up hill is going to take a little longer next week.

According to the Tuolumne County Public Works Department, Old Priest Grade will be closed part of next week for roadwork starting 7 a.m. Wednesday through 5 p.m. Friday.

This closure will not affect New Priest Grade (Highway 120) into Groveland and up into Yosemite.

Growing up in San Francisco in the 1950s, I have vivid memories of the Priest Grade. Cars over-heating, having to back down to make room for downhill traffic and something I can only remember as “vapor lock.”

I’d still rather take the old grade just for sentimental reasons. I’m glad to read they’re doing work on it, not closing it for good.

They still do that. LOL. For the people who wonder what all the vegetable oil containers and empty bleach bottles alongside the road are, locals put out water for those people who can’t figure out to turn off the AC on old Priest Grade and overheat.

A couple of cars ago I had an 78 GMC Jimmy, the big one. I took that bad boy up the old road once. Never again. It was as wide as both lanes.
