Morning Shot – Aug 10 2009

Eric Chalifour took this photo and called it “God’s Rock”. I’ve never actually thought about shooting from the top of Lembert Dome in Tuolumne Meadows but now I’m revising my list of “Great Places to Shoot Sunsets in Yosemite”.

This shot is super awesome, Eric. Not just awesome, but SUPER awesome. The tone is great. Very nicely done.

Today’s Forecast:
Hot! High of 98F in Yosemite Valley. Overnight lows in the upper 50s – low 60s.

Wear a hat and sunscreen if you plan on hiking today. Take plenty of water.

Happening Today:
It’s my birthday! Tonight there will be cake and ice cream and presents! Feel free to pick up some cake and ice cream and celebrate along with us!

I discovered a similar subject on top of Lembert a few summers ago – I wrote about it here: http://www.gdanmitchell.com/2008/07/30/leaving-lembert-dome-dusk-2

Short story: I was shooting a typical Lembert sunset from the summit – tripod and the whole nine yards. Finished shooting, loaded everything into the pack to head down. Walked about a minute and the most incredible post-sunset light suffused the scene just as a lone hiker crossed the lower section of the dome with the crest beyond. Dropped pack, fired off three frames w/o tripod, one worked. (Licensed it for use in a periodical shortly later.)
