I’m traveling with my family (3 young kids) in a minivan up to Yosemite from the Bay Area next week (to stay in Yosemite lodge). What are the road conditions we need to be prepared for? Do we need to get chains?
The forecast is for snow this weekend but then highs in the mid 50’s to low 60’s next week. If you’re going to the Valley you should be OK but you are required to carry chains during the winter months when entering the park. As always snacks, water and extra blankets are a good idea.
The roads are generally free of snow but may have some ice in the shaded areas especially along Southside Drive. Traffic is also being rerouted around Yosemite Village and Camp Curry due to construction.
If you decide to head up to the higher elevations along 120 or 140 you may encounter some snow on the roadway, water, and icy patches.

I think you are a bit off on that forecast. Although 50 and 60 degree temperatures _can_ occur in the Valley this time of year, this weekend it will not be that warm. A very cold pool of air is lodged over California through the weekend and highs are unlikely to get much beyond the low 40s and it will be quite a bit colder early and late in the day. There is even a possibility of some snow on the Valley floor this weekend, so definitely carry those chains.
