Hetch Hetchy Road Closed

The Hetch Hetchy Road is closed indefinitely after park officials discovered water undercutting a hillside beneath the road making the road “extremely unstable”.

The road is still intact, but water undercutting the hillside below the pavement has made it “extremely unstable,” Cobb said.

The National Park Service temporarily closed the road in December due to snow and discovered erosion on Dec. 26, she said.

The road remained closed from the Hetch Hetchy entrance station at Camp Mather to the reservoir — about a five-mile stretch.

“It’s probably not going to reopen until early to mid-March,” Cobb said. “That’s our best estimate.” She said Hetch Hetchy Road is the only road that leads to the reservoir, but that the reservoir is the least-visited area in the park.
