Going Hiking In April

Reader Jeff wrote in to ask:

We are going to be visiting Yosemite April 19-23 and we were wondering what trails might be open (free of snow) that time of the year. Tentatively, we are hiking the lower trails at Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite Valley, but we were hoping for a good third hike.

Well Jeff, right now it’s just too hard to tell what’s going to be open around the Valley. It’s been unseasonably snowy and wet again this year. I would say you’re pretty safe with the lower trails around Hetch Hetchy no matter what the weather. As a good third hike you might think about the Merced Grove, Tuolumne Grove or even leaving the park and hitting the trail along the river in Briceburg or Hites Cove for some excellent wildflower displays.

Good luck and have a great trip.

I hiked the trail at Hite’s Cove last weekend, and it was lovely. The poppies and baby blue eyes are in full swing, and there are quite a few shooting stars. Even a few black eyed susans, which is interesting, since they are usually a later blooming flower. I would guess that the wildflower peak will be in another couple of weeks, so around April 20 should be gorgeous. The river, is, of course, roaring along. This is a great, uncrowded springtime trail about 14 miles from El Portal, on 140, toward Mariposa. Enjoy!
