Don’t Try to Enter on Highway 120

Just heard from a couple different sources that people trying to enter the park on Highway 120 are being told to turn around and go back if their destination is Yosemite Valley. If you want to go to Yosemite use Highway 140 from Mariposa or Highway 41 from Oakhurst. You can take Highway 49 from Highway 120 down the hill from Groveland (turn at the Fish Hatchery by Lake Don Pedro) and head to Coulterville then continue on Highway 49 to Mariposa or Oakhurst. This is about an hour to hour and a half detour depending on which entrance you choose to enter.

Right! This is on the CalTran site (http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi):

“This highway information is the latest reported as of Friday, August 28, 2009 at 10:40 AM: SR 120 [IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA]
ACCESS TO YOSEMITE VALLEY IS CLOSED DUE TO A WILDLAND FIRE. BIG OAK FLAT RD WITHIN THE PARK IS CLOSED. TIOGA PASS REMAINS OPEN AT THIS TIME.”

FOR YOSEMITE NAT’L PARK ROAD INFORMATION CALL 209-372-0200

    So:
A.) Hy120 is open to go over Tioga Pass but not into Yosemite Valley. Big Oak Flat Road, now closed, runs from Hy 120 into the valley.

    And

B.)Hy 120 is the only road open to Tioga Pass. You can’t get over Tioga from Hy 140 or Hy 41 at this time due to the closure of the Big Oak Flat Road closure
