A Beautiful Shot and A Great Program for Photographers

Photo: A light dusting of snow on the Manzanita and pine trees highlights a cloud shrouded Half Dome in the background.

I happened to glance over at the Yosemite Association webcam from Sentinel Dome this morning and I caught this awesome image that I thought I’d share with everyone. What an awesome shot.

By the way, if you’ve ever wondered what I use to adjust photos I used to use Photoshop but recently I’ve made the switch to another program that I think is truly awesome, Pixelmator.

Pixelmator is a Mac only program (built around Apples Core Image engine) that allows you to do everything you would in an expensive program like Photoshop but for WAY less. We’re talking $59 compared to over $1000 here people. And it does everything! I mean: levels, alpha channels, masking, cropping, touch ups, redeye, exposure. It’s there. I’ve been a Photoshop snob for years but man, I am impressed. If you want to check it out head over to http://www.pixelmator.com. You can download a fully functional demo but I liked it so much I bought it.

Note: This was not a paid endorsement. It’s just that good.

It is a beautiful shot. I like the dust of snow or frost.

There is also another program the can do all this for free. It is a open source program called GIMP http://gimp.org/ It works with Linux, Unix, Mac, and Windows. It’s GUI is not quite so fancy but it has all the functions too. You also can use Photoshop filters with it.

I use GIMP, too – it works great.
Plus, people freak out when you talk about playing with photos and the gimp….
