During the winter the Big Oak Flat Road (Highway 120) is typically icy and chains may be required especially in the days following a storm.
Highway 140 (the Wawona Road) also typically has ice and snow on the road and motorists are asked to chain up frequently during the winter.
You are required, by law, to carry chains in your vehicle in Yosemite during the winter months (even 4-wheel drive vehicles) and should be prepared to use them at any time conditions warrant. It’s also a good idea to keep a “what-if” bag with emergency items, non-perishable food, water, and emergency blankets in your car while traveling in the mountains during winter months.
