Winter Storms Expected to Bring Snow for Christmas to Yosemite

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Sierra tonight after as a wave of storms move into Northern California bringing rain, snow and high winds.

KCRA3: “A winter storm warning was issued for the Sierra in advance of a strong wave of rain and snow coming Monday evening and early Tuesday.

About 0.19 inches of rain fell in the valley Monday in the Sacramento area, with some foothill locations reporting more.

Snow was falling above 4,000 feet early in the day.

Drivers heading over the Sierra are urged to bring chains.

On Tuesday, snow will fall as low as 3,500 feet and elevations above 7,000 feet may see 3 feet of snow. Wind gusts of 50 mph over Sierra passes will result in whiteout conditions, making driving very dangerous.”

If you’re headed into the park you are required by law to carry tire chains and may be required at any time to chain up. During the winter it’s always wise to carry with you extra food and water in your car as well as blankets and flashlights in case you should become stuck in snow drift or run off the road. Always leave a well detailed itinerary so that if something does happen to you aid can be brought to you as soon as possible.
