Want to See the Firefall? Here’s Where to Go

Every year, during the month of Februrary the setting sun is at such an angle that it illuminates the east buttress of El Capitan. Sometimes, if you’re in the right spot at those times the sunlight seems to light the seasonal waterfall of Horsetail Creek on fire. Most everyone has heard this story and is familiar with the beautiful shot made by Galen Rowell in 1973.

Normally the best places to catch this event are the El Capitan Picnic Area or the Concessionaires Woodlot as Galen Rowell did but this year the recent rock slide off Middle Brother have closed the section of road leading to both areas. Don’t sweat it though, Edie has made a really cool map and posted it on Flickr of some other possible locations and the proof they’re good is in her photos.
