Tuolumne County Supervisors are asking Stanislaus National Forest officials to think twice before cutting some services and removing some campgrounds and restrooms that are popular with visitors to Yosemite.

UnionDemocrat.com: “To save money and more efficiently manage its 89 developed sites, forest officials have proposed reducing the season of operation at some sites, like the Donnell Vista overlook, and decommissioning select campgrounds by removing things like toilets and tables and returning areas to their natural state.

This ‘serious reduction in recreational capacity’ comes at a time when the Stanislaus is projecting that there will be a 42 percent increase in recreational usage over the next 20 years, the supervisors’ letter states.

‘I did not like what I saw on the hit list’ for reductions on the Groveland Ranger District, said Board Chairman Mark Thornton, whose district includes the Groveland area.

Those cutbacks include decommissioning the Moore Creek Group Campground and removing the popular restroom at the Rim of the World Observation Area – a rest stop between Groveland and Yosemite National Park.”
