Some Yosemite Camps To Remain Closed

Press Telegram: “The heavy snow dumped on the Sierra Nevada this winter is going to keep some of Yosemite National Park’s popular high country campgrounds closed for the summer, park officials said.
Although the park’s crew managed to cut through enough snow to predict the opening of Tioga road which crosses the Sierra from east to west by Friday, park officials said the snowpack is too deep in some areas to allow several high-elevation camps to open at all.

Glen Aulin, May Lake, Sunrise, Merced Lake and Vogelsang, at elevations that vary from 7,200 to 10,300 feet, will remain buried or too soggy to use all summer long, officials said. Fifty-six tent-cabins that accommodate 204 people at a time are closed for the season, according to Kerri Holden, a spokeswoman for DNC Parks and Resorts, which operates the camps.

That means 3,400 people will have their reservations canceled. They’ll be offered a refund or a chance to transfer their reservation to next summer, Holden said.

This is only the second time the high Sierra camps are being kept closed all summer since they were established in 1916, park officials said. But there seems to be no way around it. One of the areas, May Lake, is still buried under 12 feet of snow.”
