Sierra Glaciers Disappearing at Alarming Rate, Scientists Report

A great story aired on KXTV 10, the local news station out of Sacramento that serves the Yosemite region, on the shrinking glaciers of the Sierra and Yosemite. I wasn’t able to get the online video to work but the story is great. Be sure you check out the Reporters Notebook after you read the story. It gives a lot of insight into how the article was put together and what Dan Adams went through to get his story (imagine two guys schlepping camera equipment up steep, granite slopes). Here’s a teaser from the story.

KXTV 10: “For thousands of years, they have served as a quiet reminder of nature’s power and beauty. Now, scientists in the Sierra Nevada say hundreds of glaciers are melting at such an alarming rate that the rivers of ice could soon be a thing of the past.

In Yosemite National Park, where glacial movement began carving out the majestic valley landscape nearly a million years ago, experts say the ravages of global warming have had a massive impact on the blocks of glacial ice that still remain.

“It’s absolutely huge and it’s undeniable. These glaciers are wasting away,” Portland State University researcher Dr. Andrew Fountain said.”
