Safe Driving In Winter

With the rain and snow that’s currently falling in and around Yosemite it’s important to remember a few key driving tips.

Take it slow. The roads within the park are frequently icy and patches of black ice can be found along most sections of road during the winter months. Though the posted speedlimit in chain control areas is 25 drive what is safe for the road. If this means slowing considerably, do it. Better safe than sorry.

Go early. Icy and snowy roads require more cautious driving. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and don’t be in a rush. Take as much time as you need.

Avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes. Think slow and gentle when driving on ice. Your cars tires generate some grip even on icy roads but quick changes of direction and sudden stops can cause your car to go out of control. Drive slow and gentle on icy sections.

Plan ahead. Watch the road ahead and think before you drive. By planning ahead you’ve already gone 1/2 the distance. Prepare yourself for what’s coming in the road.

Chain Up. Don’t be afraid to use your chains. They offer you added traction and stability on icy and snowy roads.

Buckle up. This is the one thing that can save your life more often than naught. Buckle that seatbelt and make sure your kids are in approved child restraints.
