Photo of the Day: Poppies and Peaks by Garry Hayes

From the man who taught me that a rock is more than something your brother throws at you and geologists take no schist come two awesome photos for Photo of the Day.

The first is, of course, poppies. The second Garry took along Highway 49 around Bagby (between Coulterville and Mariposa) and shows the top of Half Dome and El Cap. Here’s Garry’s narrative:

Spent Saturday on highway 49 doing what I always do, leading a field trip. Saw some of the poppies myself, so I have attached a poppy closeup and another of the tip-top of Yosemite Valley icons (El Cap, Half Dome and Clouds Rest), also from Highway 49, and with a pretty extreme zoom. It was a great travel day!

If you get the chance I highly recommend Garry’s geology class at Modesto Junior College. It’s a lot of fun and Garry is a great teacher. The field trips you get to go on are awesome. Be sure to check out Garry’s blog over at Geotripper.Blogspot.com where Garry has done his own bit of searching for Half Dome from the Central Valley.

Thanks for sending in the photos, Garry.
