Even though it seems everyone comes to the Sierra to see the beauty of Yosemite there are plenty of places not in Yosemite that I think are just as beautiful, and this is one. Up Highway 4, just a few miles from the crest of the Sierra, above Lake Alpine where the road turns into a winding little one lane thing snaking over the Sierra, there’s a couple of small lakes, a tiny rustic campground set alongside the road and a few cabins. Sound like Nirvana? It is and it’s name is Mosquito Lake. Prior to the birth of my son my wife and I made numerous trips to Mosquito Lake to camp and fish and I’m hesitant to admit it (for fear it’ll be overrun and lose it’s quiet solitude) but, it’s incredibly beautiful. If you’re in the area in late June or July after the snow has melted then I’d recommend highly spending a night at Mosquito Lake. The sunrises and sunsets are the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Beautiful shot, Mike. Thanks for reminding me such a great place exists.
