Photo of the Day: Lower Yosemite Fall by Jon Shiu

Today’s Photo of the Day is a beautiful shot by Jon Shiu of Lower Yosemite Fall. Jon took the photo with a plastic toy camera with medium format roll film, printed in the darkroom and sepia toned. Pretty cool, eh?

What’s also cool is it’s Jon’s entry into the Yosemite Renaissance. For the uninitiated, the Yosemite Renaissance is a gathering of artists from in and around Yosemite along with an auction of artwork.

Yosemite Renaissance.org: “The programs of Yosemite Renaissance are intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment. Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is our hope that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.”

This year they had more submissions than in any of the 24 years the Yosemite Renaissance and Auction has been taking place. Below is a list of all the artists whose work has been selected. Among those you’ll notice Penny Otwell, a regular voice on Yosemite Blog, Michael Frye, a good friend of the blog, Christine White Loberg, William Neil (whose work is hanging in my study), and of course, Jon Shiu.
