Ostrander Ski Hut

There are still spaces available at the Ostrander Ski Hut this winter. The hut is near Ostrander Lake, elevation 8,500 ft – a 10 mile ski from the end of the (plowed) road at Badger Pass.

I’m not sure this has been really announced widely, but new this year the Mountaineering School is running the Glacier Point hut as a non-guided deal. It’s still more expensive than Ostrander. Ostrander is $20/person and Glacier Point is $110/person (all meals and drink included). So basically you have

    – camping: FREE! Long live camping! Carry everything you’ll need, but in the Sierra, that’s often not much (can usually skip the tent if you have a shovel just in case).

    – Ostrander: $20. Carry all your food and such, but don’t need a tent.

    – Glacier Point: $110. All food included. You should only need to carry a few personal items for a day trip. I don’t know whether or not bedding is provided.

Do I need to point out that if you like quiet, lonely wilderness experiences, you should do these trips during the week or, if you’re camping, go anywhere but Ostrander, GP, or Dewey Point?
