No New Clues In Search For Missing Backpacker

Union Democrat: The search for a South Korean hiker missing in Yosemite National Park was scaled back yesterday because no new clues have been found.

The search for Hyundo Ahn, 25, began on Monday and included two helicopters and 50 park employees on foot and horseback, said Scott Gediman, a Yosemite National Park spokesman. Park officials considered how long Ahn has been missing along with the dangerous terrain when they decided to stop the search, Gediman said.

The search now consists of the regular patrol by park rangers.

Ahn was last seen on June 22 in the Merced Lake area, which is about 13 miles from the John Muir Trail trailhead. Ahn started his 212-mile trek to Mount Whitney from Yosemite Valley on June 20. He planned to be at the mountain by July 1.

Gediman said there is still a possibility of finding Ahn because everyday about 150 visitors and park rangers pass through the Merced Lake area. Also, the John Muir Trail is one of the most popular trails in Yosemite.
