N. King Huber

The above name is one you need to get familiar with. If you are at all interested in the geology of Yosemite National Park, he was the guru. Although he passed away in February, I wanted to let you know about him in case you’re not. Dr. King had impressive credentials – U.S. Geological Survey Scientist Emeritus, Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and recipient of the U.S. Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award. King served as the de facto geologist for the Park for many years. He was extremely productive during his 81 years. The guru. I have his classic book: “The Geologic Story of Yosemite National Park.” It’s a soft cover layman’s text loaded with informative graphics. He makes understanding the dynamics of the park actually fun. His latest book, “Geological Ramblings In Yosemite” came out just before his death. It is chocked full of his 40 years of the study of Yosemite. He gives clear explanations of the development of Half Dome and the other granite formations. The Yosemite Association has these books available for sale at a 15% discount for members.
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “I have my books and my poetry to protect me . . . am a rock, I am an island.” – Simon And Garfunkel
