Moonbow in Yosemite – April 18-21

At the risk of promoting what is likely to already be a standing-room only event… it’s coming up this weekend!

Like the amazing ‘natural firefall‘ at Horsetail falls, moonbows at the base of Yosemite Falls have become a more and more popular photography destination. Thanks to a team from Texas State University, there are precise predictions about where and when to see this elusive natural phenomenon, making it easier for people to plan ahead, and also more crowded. (TheTexas folks also have a bunch of links to images if you want to see for yourself.)

I’ve heard stories that the Yosemite Falls moonbow was part of a coming of age ritual for the natives living in the valley, ages ago. The moonbow is a revered spirit of the valley.

Does anyone have more information about this? I’m curious to know whether this knowledge has ever been written down, or just passed on in the (not so) common folklore (which is how I heard about it).
