Lots of Cabins Still in Curry Village – A Response to Yesterdays AP Article

I just read about this on Msnbc.com. They are closing more cabins at Curry Village because of a new study. This is sad. I hope they are able to relocate some of those cabins. I love staying at Curry.

Well Michael, here’s my answer: Most of the cabins in the area that is closed are cabins that have been closed since the big rockfall. The new area just adds a few more. There’s still LOTS of cabins at Curry. You needn’t worry.

The article Michael saw was from the Associated Press who somehow got a copy of the report and press release before anyone else. They wrote an inflammatory article and headline that has confused many people. Unfortunately, since they broke the story before the press release was sent out publicly (I read the AP story on USA Today at 5:15AM PST and the release was posted at 8:00AM on the NPS website), the AP story has been the one picked up by the mass media outlets and it’s creating an unreal image as to the extent of the closures.

I’m saddened that such a one sided article was published and is being republished irresponsibly. I’d love to say I didn’t see this coming but when I posted the Rockfall video yesterday I knew exactly what the public response to the article would be, mass confusion.
