Horsetail Falls: Condition Report

P2091086

I had the pleasure of taking Don Gale’s photography group out to photograph Horsetail Falls tonight at sunset. Thanks to the help of Jessie and Ryan, we were able to break a trail into the parking lot of El Cap picnic area, so the rest of the group could follow behind without sinking in up to their knees. Once in place, we waited. The sun played peek-a-boo from behind a cloud with us for a bit, but then got down to serious business, and did a fine job of putting on a lovely show for us.

Tonight’s colors were rather peachy. I’d say they peaked at about 5:30. It took just about a half hour to walk from Southside drive to the parking lot.

The road over the crossover bridge and out to the picnic area is clear and dry! That was a pleasant surprise.

The snowfall last weekend was just what we needed, and then this spate of clear, sunny and warm days has sent snowmelt over the edge. There’s a respectable flow of water.

The pit toilet is open, there is toilet paper. Picnic benches are snowcovered, and the grills are rather muddy with snow and ash.

Thanks to Don and Mike for picking me up and taking me out there and back!

Nice shot, “Edie the Intrepid.” Count me in. I’ll be there for a week or so around lunar eclipse time. Wish it could be sooner but I know you’ll be holding down the fort in the meanwhile!
