Looks like the Forest Service is stepping up to the plate to take command over the rockslide along 140.
Modbee.com: The U.S.Forest Service ordered a 12-agency command team Monday to begin working to contain a landslide spreading large rocks and debris on Highway 140 and into the Merced River between Yosemite National Park and Mariposa.
The federal agency takes over the leadership role from the California Department of Transportation.
Also Monday, Gov. Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for Mariposa County.
The highway is expected to be closed all summer because an estimated 250 million to 300 million cubic yards of dirt and rock could fall.
The team, which includes geologists and hydrologists, also is monitoring the Merced River “very closely,” as large rocks plunging into the river could create “catastrophic” flooding iftheypileup, saidDebbie Santiago, information officer with the South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team.
