Don’t Wait Until Memorial Day

The Modesto Bee: “With his camera perched on a tripod and pointed at Yosemite Falls, Vaughn Hutchins didn’t have to think very long when asked about the perfect time to photograph one of North America’s tallest waterfalls.

‘Right now,’ he said Thursday, glancing at the puffy, wind-blown clouds drifting elegantly in and out of Yosemite Valley.

Hutchins, 52, of Eureka and many other Yosemite aficionados know the waterfalls are peaking more than a month early this year because of the skimpy snowpack.

Indeed, this may be the earliest peak since 1919 for 2,425-foot Yosemite Falls, say park officials.

Their message to Yosemite fans: Don’t wait until Memorial Day to see the falls this year.”

I just made a reservation to stay 3-4 days at Wawona campground. This is my first trip ever to Yosemite. It is before the famous crowded Memorial Day weekend, so I was hoping the whole park is quiet, but I have no idea what to expect. I have a dog with me, so no hiking this time, I guess, but I am very excited that my campsite is right next to the river, so I can do lots of fishing. Anyway, I know lots of places are still closed ’til summer time, but I should be able to drive around to do sightseeing, right? If you could give me some idea what to expect in this time of year at Yosemite (traffic, crowds, can’t-miss-places/views, snow, bears, temperature, etc…), I would really appreciate it!! Thanks!!
