Loyd forwarded an email from some folks who are visiting from Virginia for Christmas.
“We will be at Yosemite on 25th, 26th and 27th of December. Travelling from Virginia! The youngest one is 16 years old- so practically all adults!
Will everything be closed on Christmas day? Shuttles etc?
I was wondering if you could suggest what we can do? Any website I can read to get me upspeed on what to expect and how to prepare? Kind of late I agree- but…
I see that there is a snow storm expected on Dec 25. Would that mean the park will be closed?
I was hoping to do the snow shoe walk with the ranger? We will be lodging outside the Park at the south entrance.”
First, welcome to Yosemite. I’m Edie, and I live and work in Yosemite Valley. Loyd forwarded your email to me and asked me to provide you with some information.
Everything is open on Christmas day here in Yosemite. The Free Shuttle will actually have more busses on the road to accommodate visitors. Yosemite Lodge food court, the Mountain Room, and the Ahwahnee will be serving meals, and all stores will be open.
There currently is snow on the ground here, so it’s a good idea to bring thermal underwear, gloves, hats and scarves. It’s pretty cold here. Also, make sure your rental car has properly fitted tire chains or cables, and ask to be shown how to use them. Badger Pass usually has a full moon walk on snowshoes with a ranger as your guide. I am not sure how much it costs per person, but you can call 209-372-8444 and talk to the Cross Country Ski shop, and they will be able to put you in contact with the right people.
In the valley itself there is ice skating at the Curry Village ice rink. The museum and visitor’s center will also be open.
Unless that Christmas storm drops 20′ of snow, the park will not close.
Safe Journey, and best wishes for a happy holiday season.
Edie
