Big Meadow Fire Update 8-29-2009 – Evacuations and Road Closures

Here’s the word from the last NPS release on the Big Meadow Fire. Currently the fire is over 3506 acres. Old El Portal, Yosemite View Lodge were evacuated last night. Crane Flat and Tamarack Flat campground are closed.

Road Closures:
The Big Oak Flat Road into Yosemite Valley from Crane Flat to the junction with Highway 140 from Mariposa remains closed. Foresta Road is closed.

Yesterdays data shows the fire to be only 2-2 1/2 miles from the Tioga Road. The Tioga Road is still open at this time.

Highway 49 is subject to delays as fire crews work in the area in and around El Portal. Please use caution and drive slowly when in the area.

Air:
Particulate matter within the park has degraded to 46.4 ug/m3 and is rising. The air is currently unhealthy for sensitive groups with thick blankets of smoke and haze in the Valley and Merced River Canyon.
