Back Door Fire Scorching Earth Near Hodgdon Meadown

“A new fire was detected in the park today. It is called the Back Door Fire and is burning in the Hodgdon Meadow area just west of the campground. This fire is being suppressed because of its proximity to the Hodgdon community. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters are being aided in the southern flank of the fire by a previous prescribed fire that greatly reduced fuels in that area.

The fire is approximately 10 acres at this time and is fully lined. However, firefighters were required to build indirect fire line along the northwest flank. This is due to a great number of snags (standing dead trees that often fall when they have fire in them) and heavier fuels that are compromising firefighter safety. They are planning a backfire from the Hodgdon Campgrounds Road. This will remove fuels for the Back Door Fire on the northwest flank. Visitors and residents in the Hodgdon Meadows area, especially in the campground, should expect smoky conditions tonight. “Deb Schweizer, NPS
