NPS: “In the last few weeks, bear activity has really picked up. The apples in the Valley are ripe and there are more visitors in the frontcountry and backcountry, providing numerous opportunities for bears to be involved in conflicts with humans.
All Valley campgrounds have seen bear activity, mostly in the form of bears obtaining food from improperly latched lockers. Bears have also been getting food that is too far from the visitors (anything greater than arms length away is an opportunity for a bear).
There have been numerous car-breakins in the Valley parking lots. Hardest hit have been Curry and the Ahwahnee, but Camp 4 continues to have incidents as well. The breakins have been for as little as hand sanitizer.
The White Wolf area has at least 3 bears patrolling for food through the campgrounds and lodge areas.
Backcountry bear activity has also picked up. A female bear with cubs has been ripping into unoccupied tents and chewing on backpackers gear at Moraine Dome. There is another female with a single cub in that area as well. Glen Aulin, Vogelsang, Illillouette and Lyell Canyon have experienced bears raiding camps as well.
Bears are looking to eat enormous amounts of calories right now, no matter where they are. Make sure to keep food stored properly and with in arms reach whenever it’s not in an approved storage container.”
