There are 3 things you need to be sure you bring with you to Yosemite.
- Water. The current forecast calls for high temperatures over the next week and it’s very easy to become dehydrated while hiking.
- Sunblock. Whenever you’re outdoors it’s a good idea to use sunblock but it’s more important when you journey into the mountains where you’re less protected by the atmosphere.
- Insect Repellent. There’s still a lot of still water in the mountains and mosquitos are rampant. Don’t let the insect hordes ruin your trip.

I’ve heard Tuolumne Meadows can be really bad with the mosquitoes at certain times of the year. I’m going to be up there at the beginning of August, any guess if I’m going to be bug bait? I’ll be bringing lots of repellant and am considering ordering the bug net for my Kelty child carrier(my daughter’s not too fond of mosquitos).
June two years ago the mosquitoes were really bad at the Tuoumne Meadows campground. Personally, I would order the bug net.
I just got back from a day trip to Tuolumne Meadows. Tere is a lot of standing water and there were tons of mosquitos. I had on 100% deet and had to re-apply at the end of the day. Deet worked like a charm, but a few did get through. I don’t know what its like in August, but I hear once the standing water dries up the mosquito problem diminishes significantly.

George, how were the meadows looking right now? Have the grasses grown in yet, or still have a ways to go? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that with this late opening that it’ll still be fairly green at the beginning of august(though brown and bug free isn’t sounding too bad either ;-).
There is not any order to this! All 3 will make for a really bad trip. We were there on July 2 and mosquitos were not bad if you have repellent but it will be getting worse. I have been up there when repellent was no good.

I didn’t get very far off the main roads just because this was my first time there and I was still getting to know the area. My guess is that it’ll still be fairly green at the beginning of August, but you’ll def. see signs of the meadow drying out.
