Geology Nuts Go Nuts Over Latest Yosemite Rock Fall

The release point on Ahwiyah Point. Photo by Garry Hayes.

There are only 3 things that’ll really excite a geologist: 1) volcanic activity (muahahahha), 2) massive earthquakes, 3) massive rock falls. Needless to say last weeks Ahwiyah Point rock fall has geology nuts pouring in from all over.

One nut in particular, my former Geology Professor Garry Hayes, posted some great photos and narratives from a geologists points of view. In the first narrative Garry talks about the location of the fall on the slope above Mirror Lake, showing before and after pictures. Look close and you can get an idea of the magnitude of the amount of granite that fell.

The second narrative talks about the impact area with photos (as best he could take from a safe location) showing the debris field.

In the final narrative Garry shows the 1/4″ of fine granite dust that is coating everything in the vicinity.

By the way, when the Mammoth Caldera finally blows and spreads ash from here to Missouri there will be 2 people there to watch. Garry, because he called it, and me taking pictures because I’m a nut too.

If you’re a geology nut too or you are just curious about the world around you then be sure to check out Garry’s blog over at http://geotripper.blogspot.com/

Great stuff Garry. Thanks for sharing.
