Sierra Passes Opening For Memorial Day Travel

If you’re looking to go across the Sierra there’s good news, Highway’s 108 and 4 are both clear and open. If you’re waiting to cross on Highway 120 or to visit the Yosemite High Country, you’re going to have a wait a bit longer however.

News 10: “Caltrans crews re-opened Sonora Pass on Highway 108 to traffic Wednesday afternoon. The 9,622-foot pass through Tuolumne and Mono counties had been closed from 26 miles east of Strawberry to five miles west of the junction of US-395. Caltrans said the pass has been cleared of snow for the past several days, but repairs were needed to fix damage to the roadway from heavy snowfall.

Meanwhile, crews are preparing to re-open Ebbetts Pass on State Route 4 in Alpine County Thursday afternoon. The stretch from Alpine Lake to seven miles west of the State Route 89 junction also received repair work for winter damage, according to Caltrans.

A string of major storms dumped snowfall between 144 and 170 percent of normal across much of the Sierra Nevada range this winter.

Travelers looking to take State Route 120 from the Sierra Nevada to Yosemite National Park will have to wait, however. Caltrans said heavy snowfall on the nearly 10,000-foot elevation pass through Tuolumne and Mono counties will keep the roadway closed until early July.”
