Two Bear Cubs: A Miwok Legend

The San Souci’s are well known in the childrens literature circles for their wonderful stories and colorful, vibrant artwork that really bring stories to life. Two Bear Cubs is an adaptation of a Southern Sierra Miwok legend as to the creation of El Capitan (Tu-tok-a-nu-la).

In the book two bear cubs stray from their mother and fall to sleep on a rock. As the days go by the rock grows and grows until finally the cubs are high up among the clouds. The mother bear and other animals frantically search for the missing cubs when the hawk flies down to tell them of the cubs predicament.

After many futile attempts by the other animals the lowly inch worm makes its way to the top of the rock to rescue the cubs and show them the safe way which to come down.

This is a great book for kids and adults alike. Beautifully illustrated, Two Bear Cubs is a great book to curl up to with your kids (or grandkids) on a rainy day.
