Edie put up this photo the other day and I knew it would be perfect for Photo of the Day. Most of the photographers in Yosemite at this time of year are heading out at sunset to capture Horsetail Fall as it captures the setting suns rays turning it into a “firefall”. Edie, however, went out when it was cloudy and caught this great shot of the clouds shrouding the cliffs around the fall. She added a subtle sepia tone which I think really warms up the photo. Nice job, Edie.

Hey don’t forget Edie needs to eat to keep taking these beautiful shots. If you love her work why not get a print for your home? It’s sure to be the topic of conversation at your next dinner party or family gathering. Visit Edie’s site at LittleRedTent.net to order your print today.

We haven’t done a Photo of the Day in a while so what better way to return from hiatus than with this awesome shot from Chuck Cagara of MagicalLightPhotography.com.

Chuck said: I was lucky to be in the park from Jan. 18 – Jan. 24th. We tell friends, “We had falling trees, power outages, limited cell/tv/internet access, food running low and inconveniences of every description. Well, it could have been worse – we could have been at home instead!”

The Yosemite snow of January 19-22 brought marvelous and varied conditions of all descriptions. Here, on the afternoon of the 19th, the storm was just getting underway in earnest before breaking for a period and revealing Bridal Veil Fall and Cathedral Rocks that had, moments before, been shrouded in cloud.

Many elements work together to make this a pleasing image for me. The leading lines of granite and trees bring the eye from top right down to the fall in lower left. The valley mist suggests that it is not mist at all but rather a pool of water emanating from the output of Bridal Veil fall.

The “normal” view from this position at Tunnel View usually includes El Capitan on the left, making for a fairly static depiction. Here I wanted to emphasize the sweeping grandeur of the place by aiming for a more dynamic, sweeping flow of the scene.

Thanks for sending in your photo and story Chuck. To see more of Chuck’s great photos check out MagicalLightPhotography.com

Today my wife and I and the rugrats went around the park taking pictures and shooting some video. This isn’t the best shot I’ve taken of Yosemite Falls by far but it is the first shot I’ve taken this year.

If you’re headed up to the park I can tell you there’s a little snow on the ground and it’s mostly ice. Paths are slippery and icy but the roads are sandy and fairly clear except for a little black ice. Nothing deep like in years past. The crowds today were moderate for Yosemite. The gray stripe at the top of the trees in the bottom isn’t something wrong with my camera, it’s smoke from the fires people were making in the bbq’s at Swinging Bridge.

Roads
I should point out Northside Drive is closed between Camp Curry and Yosemite Village with 2-way traffic on Southside Drive.

Weather
The weather is beautiful with bright blue skies and some high clouds. Temperatures are in the mid 50’s during the day and low 30’s at night. No rain or snow in the forecast for the next week so should be awesome if you want to head up next weekend.
