Many people come to Yosemite Valley and marvel at how many stars there are. Of course, Yosemite doesn’t have nearly the light pollution as most metropolitan areas, but today’s Photo of the Day by Tony Immoos proves that yes, even Yosemite has light pollution.

I found this beautiful Photo by Joe Dsilva while browsing around Flickr and instantly knew it was going to be Photo of the Day. I started to write a caption but the one Joe wrote himself is even better and sums it up perfectly – GET OUT OF THE VALLEY!

Eastern yosemite is dotted with lots of crystal clear lakes, which makes for amazing hikes, And this time of the year, some of them are even the right time for flowers. Just the way it always tends to be when you are not hauling your macro lens with you.

Tony Immoos sent me a link to this really cool photo he took from Olmsted Point the other morning just before the sun came up. I’ll let Tony tell you about it in his own words.

I was at Glacier Point Saturday night with Jennifer Franklin (jentwo) and her parents till about 1:30ish watching for meteors, when they left I then drove to Tioga road not really having a plan. Somewhere along the way I thought of a shot to try at Olmsted Point at sunrise so I stopped there to get a little bit of sleep before the sun rose. At about 5:25 I woke to see the sky getting brighter and sat up to look at Half Dome, much to my surprise I could see the flashlights from pre-dawn climbers on the top and on the cable route of the rock.
I quickly set up my camera gear hoping to capture the moment even though it was nearly dark and focus would be nearly impossible. I aimed my vehicle at Half Dome and started flashing the headlights hoping to get a response from the climbers which I did almost immediately. I’m not 100% sure the people on top flashed back but the person that was on the cables definitely saw me and flashed his/her light in return.

When preparing for today’s Photo of the Day I did something I haven’t done before, I asked people on Twitter to send me links to their photos if they were interested in being Photo of the Day. I must say, all the photos people sent me links to were awesome. In fact, I had a difficult time choosing. But, in the end I picked this beautiful shot by Gary Crabbe at Enlightened Images (http://www.EnlightPhoto.com). I think you’ll agree that the colors are just stunning.

Today’s Photo of the Day is a beautiful sunset shot from Sentinel Dome by Cameron Grant. Cameron posted a great caption with the photo:

Perched high on the side of Sentinel Dome at sunset in June of 2010, I had descended a ways to get away from a group of HDR hating photo nerds (feel free to borrow that one). I settled next to this huge snow patch and set up for this shot. Glancing off to my right I realized that one slip would result in me sliding down the snow slope most likely to my death. This slope quickly steepened and then fell over a drop several hundred feet below. No one knew I was up here, and the photo nerds weren’t responsible for my well being or for that matter even aware I had disappeared. They were much to concerned with discussing lens types and f stops. I became very conscious of the inherent risk I was taking by trying to ‘take pretty pictures’. After the sun set I flipped on my headlamp and scampered back up the slabs to my pack and then descended to my camp site in the woods, just a little wiser and no worse for wear.

Aparajith Bharathiyan posted this awesome photo on Flickr that I knew was going to be Photo of the Day when I saw it. I love how he creatively framed the flowers and worked in the bridge in the background with a shallow depth of field so you can still make out what it is but it’s not the focal point of the image.

I can’t explain what draws me to this photo of the tufa at Mono Lake taken by James Wang. Maybe the brightness, the color, the sharpness, the contrast or maybe just the composition, either way I can’t explain it. The important thing though is this is one damn fine photo and an awesome photo for Photo of the Day.

I love Bodie. For the uninitiated, Bodie is a ghost town that’s now a California State Park. The buildings in the town are held in a state of “arrested decay” and serve as an example of what life was like in the late 1800s. It’s about an hour down a dirt road just east of Yosemite and it makes for a pretty fun place to visit with kids. Some of the houses there still have plates and dinnerware on the tables like the residents were sitting down to dinner and just disappeared. Whenever someone asks me about some place to visit close to the park that’s fun I always recommend they check out Bodie.

Besides being a neat place to visit it’s also a great place to take photos. Today’s Photo of the Day is a beautiful black and white of Bodie by Magnus Wrenninge.

Nice shot, Magnus. I hope you have a print of this hanging somewhere everyone can see it. It’s awesome.

Photo of the Day: Light on Bridalveil by Victor Cajiao

Today’s Photo of the Day comes to us from Victor Cajiao. You may already know Victor as the creator of The Typical Mac User Podcast, and the Typical Shutterbug Podcasts. Two great podcasts that if you’re into photography and Macs you’ll want to check out.

The image is a compilation of 5 bracketed exposures that Victor merged into one HDR image. If you haven’t played around with making HDRs it’s kinda fun. You under expose one 2 images, over expose 2 images and make one exactly what the camera is telling you to expose for. Then using software like Photoshop or Hydra you merge the images. It works best if you’re on a tripod because the software finds points within the photos to use as reference then aligns the photos based on those points. If you move you’ll see weird ghosting in the images. I like the more natural looking HDR images not the surreal ones.
